Hey Operation Flourish Fam!

With June 19th approaching, I wanted to talk about a vitally important holiday: Juneteenth!

Now, you might be thinking, "Isn't that just for Black Americans?" Absolutely not! Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom for ALL Americans. Here's why:

A Shared History, A Shared Future:

On June 19th, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received news of the Emancipation Proclamation, marking the official end of slavery in the United States. It may have come two and a half years after the proclamation itself, but this day signifies a turning point in American history.

Freedom's Promise Extends to All:

Juneteenth isn't just about celebrating the end of slavery for Black Americans. It's a celebration of the promise of freedom for ALL Americans. It's a day to reflect on the ongoing fight for racial equality and recommit ourselves to building a more just and equitable society.

How We Can ALL Celebrate Juneteenth:

There are countless ways to celebrate Juneteenth, regardless of your race or background! Here are a few ideas:

  • Attend a Juneteenth parade or festival: Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and traditions associated with the holiday.

  • Educate yourself: Learn about the history of slavery in America and the ongoing struggle for racial justice.

  • Support Black-owned businesses: Give back to the community and celebrate Black excellence.

  • Host a cookout or potluck featuring traditional Juneteenth dishes.

  • Reflect and discuss: Have conversations with family and friends about the significance of Juneteenth and how we can move towards a more equitable future.

Juneteenth is a time to celebrate freedom, but it's also a call to action. Let's use this holiday to recommit ourselves to building a nation where everyone truly has the opportunity to thrive.

Cheerfully yours,

Kayla Myers
