💜 Every older adult deserves to age with dignity, respect, and safety. This World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let's choose compassion, connection, and community as we work to help everyone flourish! 💜

Hello Operation Flourish Fam!

Every year on June 15, communities around the world recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a day dedicated to raising awareness about a serious but often overlooked issue affecting millions of older adults.

When we think about health, we often focus on nutrition, exercise, sleep, and mental well-being. While those are all important, flourishing also requires something more fundamental: safety, dignity, and meaningful human connection.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day reminds us that every person deserves to age with respect, compassion, and support.

What Is Elder Abuse?

Elder abuse occurs when an older adult experiences harm or distress through the actions—or lack of actions—of another person. Abuse can take many forms, including:

💜 Physical abuse

💜 Emotional or psychological abuse

💜 Financial exploitation

💜 Neglect

💜Abandonment

Unfortunately, many cases go unreported due to fear, isolation, dependence on caregivers, or uncertainty about where to seek help.

As a society, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to advocate for the well-being of older adults and ensure they are valued members of our communities.

What Does Elder Abuse Awareness Have to Do with #ChooseHealth?

Everything! The five pillars of #ChooseHealth remind us that health is about more than physical wellness. It's about creating environments where people can thrive at every stage of life.

Joyful Movement

💜 Older adults benefit greatly from opportunities to stay active. Whether it's a walk through the neighborhood, chair exercises, gardening, or dancing, movement supports physical health and social connection.

💜 Consider inviting an older friend, relative, or neighbor to join you for a walk or community activity.

Balanced Nutrition

💜 Food insecurity and neglect can put older adults at risk for poor health outcomes.

💜 A simple act like sharing a meal, delivering groceries, or checking in on a loved one's nutritional needs can make a meaningful difference.

Restorative Sleep

💜 Stress, loneliness, illness, and unsafe living situations can interfere with quality sleep.

💜 Helping older adults access safe environments and supportive relationships contributes to healthier sleep and overall well-being.

Mindful Mental Health

💜Isolation is one of the greatest threats facing many seniors.

💜A phone call, handwritten note, visit, or conversation can help combat loneliness and remind someone they are seen, valued, and cared for.

Avoiding Risk Behaviors

💜 Protecting older adults from scams, financial exploitation, neglect, and abuse is an important part of creating safe communities.

💜 Educating ourselves and others about warning signs can help prevent harm before it occurs.

Small Actions Can Create Big Change

Many people assume elder abuse is a problem for someone else to solve. The truth is that each of us can play a role.

You can:

💜 Check in regularly with older family members and neighbors.

💜 Listen without judgment when concerns are shared.

💜 Learn the warning signs of abuse and neglect.

💜 Encourage social connection and community involvement.

💜 Advocate for policies and programs that support older adults.

💜 Show kindness, patience, and respect in everyday interactions.

Flourishing Has No Age Limit

One of the most beautiful things about life is that every stage offers opportunities for growth, purpose, and connection.

Our older generations carry stories, wisdom, resilience, and experiences that enrich our families and communities. They deserve to be protected, celebrated, and empowered to flourish.

This World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let's commit to creating communities where every individual, regardless of age, can live with dignity, safety, and hope.

Because flourishing isn't reserved for the young. Flourishing is for everyone! 💜

Cheerfully yours,

Kayla Myers

P.S.

💜 Take five minutes today to reach out to an older adult in your life.

A phone call, visit, text message, or shared meal could brighten their day and strengthen a connection that helps both of you flourish. 💜
