Sometimes the best way to reconnect with the present moment is to kick off your shoes and feel the ground beneath your feet. 🌎👣

Hello Operation Flourish Fam!

Did you know that June 1st is National Go Barefoot Day? While it may sound like a quirky unofficial holiday, it actually carries a powerful reminder about our connection to movement, mindfulness, and overall well-being.

Most of us spend our days rushing from one responsibility to the next. We move from our beds to our shoes, from our cars to our offices, and often don't think twice about our connection to the world beneath our feet. National Go Barefoot Day invites us to slow down and reconnect.

As someone passionate about helping others #ChooseHealth through Operation Flourish, I love finding simple, accessible ways to support our well-being. Going barefoot, even for a few minutes, can be a fun opportunity to engage with several of the five pillars of #ChooseHealth.

Joyful Movement Starts from the Ground Up

When we walk barefoot on safe surfaces such as grass, sand, or soft soil, we become more aware of how our bodies move. Without realizing it, we often engage muscles in our feet and lower legs that don't get much attention when we're wearing supportive shoes.

Whether it's a walk through the backyard, a stroll along the beach, or simply standing in the grass, going barefoot can encourage us to move with greater intention and appreciation for what our bodies can do.

A Mindful Mental Health Moment

One of my favorite aspects of National Go Barefoot Day is how naturally it promotes mindfulness.

Think about the last time you truly noticed the feeling of grass beneath your feet or the warmth of the sand on a sunny day. Those sensations pull us into the present moment. Instead of worrying about tomorrow's to-do list or replaying yesterday's challenges, we're focused on what we're experiencing right now.

Research continues to show that spending time in nature can help reduce stress and improve mood. Going barefoot outdoors can be a simple way to combine mindfulness and nature into one meaningful experience.

Reconnecting with Gratitude

Sometimes the smallest experiences can create the greatest appreciation.

Feeling the earth beneath our feet reminds us that health isn't always about major life changes. Often, flourishing comes from the little moments, taking a walk, getting outside, breathing fresh air, and appreciating the incredible body God has given us.

National Go Barefoot Day is a reminder that wellness doesn't have to be complicated. It can start with something as simple as kicking off your shoes and enjoying the world around you.

A Few Safety Tips

As much as I love the spirit of this holiday, it's important to prioritize safety and avoid risk behaviors. Always be mindful of where you're walking and watch for hazards such as broken glass, sharp objects, hot pavement, or uneven terrain. If you have medical conditions affecting your feet or balance, consult your healthcare provider before participating.

Remember, #ChooseHealth is about making choices that help us flourish safely and sustainably.

Your National Go Barefoot Day Challenge

Today, I challenge you to spend 10 minutes barefoot in a safe outdoor space.

Take a walk through the grass. Stand quietly and notice the sensations beneath your feet. Practice gratitude. Take a few deep breaths. Allow yourself to be fully present.

Then ask yourself: How do I feel?

You might be surprised by how something so simple can leave you feeling more grounded, refreshed, and connected.

After all, flourishing doesn't always require a giant leap. Sometimes it starts with a single barefoot step.

Cheerfully yours,

Kayla Myers
