Hey Operation Flourish Fam!

Let me start of by saying, my Miss Indiana journey took a wildly unexpected turn! As many of you know, I tore my ACL during the talent portion of the competition on Friday June 28th. Talk about a plot twist! But you know what?  Even with a throbbing knee and a dream seemingly derailed, I persevered.

And that's what I want to talk about today: perseverance.  Life throws curveballs, but it's how we handle them that defines us. During my improvised talent, a HerStory, I shared a framework I use to navigate adversity, and I wanted to delve a little deeper into that here.  I call it the 3 Rs: Reframe, Relinquish, and Reset.

Reframe: Flip the Script on Your Setbacks

Let's be honest, injuring myself onstage wasn't exactly part of the plan. It was painful and devastating, but instead of seeing it as a failure, I reframed it. This became an opportunity to show my vulnerability, my strength, and my ability to adapt.  It wasn't about the cheer routine anymore; it was about rising above the unexpected.

Relinquish: Let Go of What You Can't Control

I train hard, I plan meticulously, but sometimes the universe throws you lemons.  My injury was a stark reminder that we can't control everything.  So, instead of clinging to what should have been, I relinquished control and focused on what I could control: my attitude, my resilience, and my ability to perform the rest of the competition to the best of my ability.

Reset: Breathe, Re-center, and Rise Again

It's easy to get overwhelmed in challenging moments.  That's why the reset is so important.  Taking a deep breath, visualizing success, and reminding myself of my why – that's what got me back on track.  It allowed me to quiet the panic and refocus on giving it my all, regardless of the circumstances.

Let me tell you, those 3 Rs have helped me navigate many challenging moments and adversities throughout the course of my life. That is why I knew I had to lean into them to get me through the rest of Miss Indiana week. The 3 Rs are tools to be used by everyone, every day. Life will always have its setbacks, but it's how we rise from the ashes that truly matters. So, the next time you're facing adversity, remember the 3 R's: Reframe, Relinquish, and Reset. Then implement them knowing you've got this!

With grit and glitter and still cheerfully yours,

Kayla Myers

P.S. The below is the words I wrote for my improvised HerStory. The actual performance was not exact but hit the key points.

I always wanted to do a "Ted Talk", but I never envisioned this is how it would happen.

Everyone experiences adversity and my injury yesterday was a setback. But here I am today pivoting. Literally — pivoting my weight from my left foot to my right as I share the secret of how a phoenix can rise from the ashes.

From a young age, I felt as if I was staring into the flames as I witnessed abuse in my own home. Memories of hiding in my bedroom, afraid of the violence that surrounded me. An unsafe home turned into homelessness.

Life’s trials left me forever changed, but the fire within me to overcome burned bright.

Now I want to share my secret, of how I am standing here today. It comes down to 3 R’s – reframe, relinquish, and reset.

Yesterday, after honoring my emotions, I REFRAMED my injury from a failure into an OPPORTUNITY to showcase my vulnerability.

I planned for every possibility, but my injury reminded me that the unforeseeable happens and I must RELINQUISH control.

I RESET my mind and body through deep breaths and power poses.

Tonight, I stand here in a gown called Phoenix. So, like a phoenix, you too… can rise as you realize your setbacks are a setup for a comeback.
