Hey Operation Flourish Fam!

Summer vibes are strong, but when the temps rise into the danger zone, it’s time to pause and protect what matters most your health and your loved ones. Heat advisories aren’t just about being uncomfortable; they can pose serious risks to kids, adults, the elderly, and even our four-legged family members.

Let’s talk about how to thrive (not just survive) during extreme heat, with simple tips, fun activities, and a refreshing recipe you’ll want to make all season long.

Heat Safety Tips for Every Member of the Family

For Children:

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Keep refillable water bottles within reach at all times/

  • Dress in lightweight, light-colored clothing and hats.

  • Plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late evening midday heat is no joke.

  • Set up indoor play zones: build a fort, try a STEM kit, or host a family game tournament.

  • Remind them to rest heat can drain energy faster than they realize.

 For Adults:

  • Listen to your body if you feel dizzy, fatigued, or nauseous, take a break immediately.

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol during peak heat; they dehydrate your body.

  • Keep a cool, damp cloth handy for your neck and wrists to help lower body temp.

  • Use the buddy system when exercising or working outdoors.

  • Create a personal cooling station with fans, misters, and water spritzers.

For the Elderly:

  • Ensure access to air-conditioned spaces – public libraries, malls, or cooling centers are great options if home doesn’t have AC.

  • Place reminders to drink water regularly, as thirst sensitivity decreases with age.

  • Schedule check-ins with family or neighbors to ensure safety.

  • Encourage light meals heavy foods raise body temp and take longer to digest.

  • Keep mobility aids (walkers, wheelchairs) in shaded areas when outside.

For Pets:

  • Keep walks short and on grass during cooler hours to protect their paws from hot pavement.

  • Never leave pets in parked cars even a few minutes can be deadly.

  • Provide plenty of shade and water, whether indoors or outdoors.

  • Create a DIY pet popsicle: freeze low-sodium chicken broth with a few treats inside.

  • Watch for signs of heat stress: excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.

Beat-the-Heat Activities

  • Indoor dance party (in air-conditioning) with your favorite playlist.

  • Try a family yoga session in the coolest room of the house.

  • Make DIY paper fans or origami creations.

  • Host a Cool Treats Challenge where each family member creates their own smoothie or frozen snack.

  • Set up a sprinkler or kiddie pool in the shade for early-morning outdoor fun.
