Hey Operation Flourish Fam!
June is Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month, a crucial time to spotlight the power of balanced nutrition in supporting cognitive function. While there's no magic bullet, the foods we eat play a significant role in protecting our brain health as we age. Think of your plate as a canvas and fill it with a vibrant array of colors – each representing vital nutrients for your brain!
Here are some brain-boosting nutrition tips to incorporate into your daily routine:
Berries, Berries, Berries! Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries – these small powerhouses are packed with antioxidants that protect brain cells from damage. Toss them in your oatmeal, yogurt, or enjoy them as a snack.
Leafy Greens are Your Friends: Spinach, kale, and collard greens are rich in vitamins K, lutein, and beta-carotene, all linked to improved cognitive function. Add them to smoothies, salads, or sauté them as a side dish.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fatty fishlike salmon, mackerel, and sardines, as well as flaxseeds and walnuts, Omega-3s are essential for brain structure and function. Aim for at least two servings of fatty fish per week.
Whole Grains for Stable Energy: Choose whole grains like oats, brown rice, and whole wheat bread over refined grains. They provide a steady release of glucose, which is the brain's primary fuel source.
Recipe Idea: Brain-Boosting Berry Smoothie
1 cup mixed berries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 cup spinach
1/2 banana
1 tablespoon chia seeds or flaxseeds
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or your preferred milk)
Optional: 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder
Blend all ingredients until smooth and enjoy a delicious and brain-friendly start to your day!
By making conscious food choices, we can actively contribute to our long-term brain health and empower ourselves to flourish.
Cheerfully yours,
Kayla Myers
