Hey Operation Flourish Fam!

Today is National Be Someone Day and I couldn't let this special moment pass without dropping in with a message from the heart. July 21 is more than just a date on the calendar. It's a powerful reminder that we all have the ability to be someone who makes a difference in a child's life even if its just for 10 minutes.Yes, you read that right -10 intentional minutes can change a life.

The History Behind the Day

National Be Someone Day was established by Project Harmony, a child advocacy organization dedicated to ending child abuse and neglect. The day urges each of us to pause and commit to doing something meaningful - something that shows a child they matter. It encourages us to be that safe space, that kind word, that role model.

This mission aligns beautifully with Operation Flourish's purpose: to empower individuals to overcome barriers and flourish. Through the five pillars of #ChooseHealth (joyful movement, balanced nutrition, restorative sleep, mindful mental health, and avoiding risk behaviors) we equip our community with tools that cultivate positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment.

So, what does it mean to be someone on this day? It's about choosing to show up. Choosing to pour into the next generation. Choosing to lead with kindness, empathy, and intention.

Practical Ways to Be Someone Today

Here are some ways you can put this day into action and live out the #ChooseHealth pillars while you're at it.

Spend Quality Time:

Take 10 minutes or more to engage a child in joyful movement - a walk, dance break, or bike ride. Moving together boosts both physical and mental health.

Prepare a Healthy Snack Together:

Teach balanced nutrition by making something fun and nourishing, like fruit kabobs or a DIY trail mix. Food is a great way to connect.

Talk and Truly Listen:

Ask open-ended questions and be fully present. Listening without judgment promotes mental wellness and deepens trust.

Model Restful Habits:

Share your nighttime routine or help a child wind down for sleep. Kids learn by example and restorative sleep is a pillar for all ages.

Encourage SelfWorth and Safety:

Speak life into their dreams, their identity, and their potential. Make sure they know how to recognize and avoid risky behaviors and where to turn for help.

Read a Book Together:

Stories build imagination, teach life lessons, and promote engagement. Bonus if it encourages healthy habits or values.

Mentor or Volunteer:

Seek out a local youth organization, school, or community center. Your consistent presence can be life-changing.

Remember being someone doesn't require a title or a long resume; it requires heart, presence, and intentionality.

Cheerfully yours,

Kayla Myers
