Movember: A Man's Health Check

Writer: Kayla MyersKayla Myers

Hey Operation Flourish Fam!

Did you know that November is Movember, a global charity event. During this month, men grow mustaches (a mo) to raise funds and awareness for men's health issues like mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and more.

How did Movember come to be?

The tradition of growing mustaches in November for Movember traces back to 2003 in Melbourne, Australia. Two friends, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, were considering ways to bring back the fading style of the mustache when they had a lightbulb moment. They decided to use the mustache as a conversation starter and a platform to raise awareness for men's health issues, particularly prostate cancer.

The idea caught on quickly, and soon men around the world were sporting mustaches in November to show their support for the cause. The mustache became a visible symbol of the movement, sparking conversations and encouraging men to prioritize their health. Movember has since expanded to include other men's health issues, such as testicular cancer and mental health. Today, it's a global phenomenon with millions of participants raising funds and awareness for these important causes.

Why am I talking about it?

As a health advocate, I believe it aligns perfectly with my platform of #ChooseHealth. Let's dive into the five pillars of #ChooseHealth and see how we can incorporate my five pillars into Movember.

1. Joyful Movement

  • Get Moving: Physical activity is crucial for overall health, including mental well-being. Engage in activities you enjoy, whether it's hitting the gym, going for a run, or playing a sport.

  • Join a Movember Team: Participating in a Movember team can provide motivation and camaraderie.

2. Balanced Nutrition

  • Fuel Your Body: A balanced diet is essential for optimal health. Prioritize whole foods, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

3. Mental Health

  • Check In: Prioritize your mental health by checking in with yourself regularly.

  • Seek Help: If you're struggling, don't hesitate to seek professional help.

  • Connect with Others: Building strong relationships can have a positive impact on mental health.

4. Risk Prevention

  • Regular Check-ups: Schedule regular check-ups with your doctor to monitor your health.

  • Screenings: Stay up to date on recommended screenings, such as prostate cancer screenings.

  • Know the Risks: Educate yourself about the health risks associated with lifestyle factors like smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor diet.

5. Restorative Sleep

  • Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.

  • Create a Sleep-Conducive Environment: Make your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool.

  • Establish a Bedtime Routine: A consistent bedtime routine can help you wind down and prepare for sleep.

By incorporating these pillars into your daily life, you can improve your overall health and well-being. Let's make Movember a month of action and prioritize men's health.

Remember, it's never too late to start prioritizing your health. Let's #ChooseHealth, together.

Cheerfully yours, Kayla Myers

P.S.

Men, if you haven't begun growing your mustache, what's stopping you? Use this month to start important conversations surrounding men's health and let your mustache spark that conversation.
