Turning silence into connection starts with one brave step: speaking your truth 💚

Hello Operation Flourish Fam!

May is here, and with it comes something deeply meaningful: Mental Health Awareness Month. This is more than a moment on the calendar; it’s an invitation. An invitation to speak, to listen, and to connect.

For so long, mental health has lived in silence. Behind smiles. Beneath “I’m fine.” Hidden in the spaces where people feel unseen or misunderstood. But silence doesn’t heal, connection does.

This month, I want to talk about something powerful: turning silence into connection by sharing our stories.

Why Sharing Your Story Matters

Your story holds power, more than you may realize.

When you open up about your experiences with stress, anxiety, burnout, or healing, you do three important things:

  1. You normalize the conversation. Someone else hears your story and realizes they are not alone.

  2. You reduce stigma. The more we talk about mental health, the less “taboo” it becomes.

  3. You create connection. Vulnerability invites community—and community fosters healing.

We often think we need to have it all figured out before we speak. But the truth is, your story doesn’t have to be perfect to be impactful: it just has to be honest.

Ways to Turn Silence into Connection

If you’re wondering how to start, here are a few meaningful and approachable ways:

1. Start small, start safe

Share with someone you trust, a friend, family member, mentor, or counselor. Connection doesn’t have to begin publicly.

2. Use your voice in your own way

Not everyone processes out loud. You can write, journal, create art, or share through social media if that feels right for you.

3. Listen just as much as you speak

Connection is a two-way street. When others share, hold space without judgment. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can say is, “I hear you.”

4. Lean into community

Whether it’s a support group, campus organization, or online space, find environments where openness is encouraged and supported.

5. Connect back to the pillars of health

Sharing your story strengthens mindful mental health, but it also impacts all five pillars of #ChooseHealth. It builds relationships, supports emotional well-being, and helps you feel engaged and purposeful.

You Are Not Alone

If there’s one thing I hope you take from this, it’s this:

You are not the only one feeling what you feel.

There is someone out there who needs your story; not because it’s extraordinary, but because it’s real. And in that realness, there is comfort, understanding, and hope.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s choose courage over silence. Let’s choose connection over isolation. Let’s choose health together.

Cheerfully yours,

Kayla Myers

P.S. This week, I challenge you to share one piece of your story with someone you trust or create space for someone else to share theirs. You never know the impact one conversation can have 💛
